Learning

WHY LEARNING MATTERS:

Learning is a way to address inequalities faced by our communities and is a ‘golden thread’ that runs through our work at CoLab. While we know there is no easy fix, what we do know from our adult learning delivery over years, is that learning, in all its forms, can bring about meaningful, sustainable change in people’s lives.

Learning is a tool for change and needs to be nurtured in a way that progressively builds confidence. Actively involving individuals in their learning process is perhaps more sustainable than teaching specific skills. When presented with the opportunities, communities can enhance their beliefs about personal agency and nurture the inherent capacity of individuals to improve their own lives and the lives of others.

Learning can be a part of anyone's narrative, irrespective of labels or prior experiences. When those in socially privileged positions develop initiatives, these tend to serve to replicate and reinforce that privilege - even unknowingly. Whether a 'service user' and 'provider,’ people should be able to engage with each other in a reciprocal and mutually beneficial manner, facilitating equal-status interactions.

Enable - Empower - Transform

The Urban Learning Academy is a group of connected organisations enabling community-based adult learning, in accessible locations, empowering and transforming the lives of people who find it hardest to connect and engage.

The ULA has designed an inclusive and varied learning programme, which is accessible and has the wider Exeter community at the centre of it. They work with a values-led, aspirational approach to collaborative working - valuing difference; respect; reciprocity; honesty and ensuring all voices are being heard.

They are working together with partner organisations to provide different ways for people to access learning – at a time and in a place that works to their needs and agenda. Organisations maintain their unique identities and are committed to doing things differently, always putting the needs of the learner first.

“We look forward to bringing learning to the heart of the city through connecting learning providers in Exeter and offering opportunities for all.”
