Our Journey

The Exeter Council of Social Services is founded by civic organisations and local volunteers.

1947

“We hope to break new ground – in the cultural field, for instance – and go on as times and needs change, working for a good life of the citizens of Exeter.”

As the state social safety net expands, the organisation becomes Exeter Council for Voluntary Services.

For 68 years Exeter CVS was at the heart of the voluntary sector in the city.

Move into Wat Tyler House – named after a leader of the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt.

1980

“As national government continues to cut funding, […] the value of communities organising and working together becomes ever more apparent.”

CoLab begins development with a two-month long creative consultation.

2015

Renovation of Wat Tyler House to become an integrated wellbeing hub.

CoLab officially opens.

2016

“2020/21 were incredibly challenging years which revealed the worst, and brought out the best in people, places and systems. […] As people step forward to make changes participate or give back, we want to be there to support and empower them to act.”

Provide much needed support during the Covid-19 pandemic.

2020

Best Civic Contribution and the overall Platinum Award from Exeter Living.

2021

Awarded significant funding from National Lottery Community Fund.

Growth and development: large-scale collaborations established to support people with complex needs.

2023

“Exeter CVS has stepped up to be a coordinator of local community and voluntary action - a broker, enabler, and catalyst for so much of what is best about our city.”

Launch Community Life Strategy 2022-2025.
