Leading Like a Compass

Reflections from our First Head of Service Gathering

In our first-ever Head of Service meeting at CoLab, we were asked to bring a story, quote, or object that reflects how we lead—or the kind of leader we aspire to be. I brought a compass.

A compass doesn’t dictate the route. It doesn’t tell you how to get from A to B. It doesn’t bark orders or draw hard lines. It simply holds steady—to true north. A quiet, constant presence that says: This is where your values live. This is what matters. Come back to this, no matter the terrain.

For me, leadership is not about commanding from the front. It’s about creating the conditions for others to find their way, to feel safe in the unknown, and to be bold in what they believe is possible. I see my role as holding space, holding hope, and occasionally holding the map upside down and laughing with others until we figure it out together.

Simon Sinek puts it beautifully:

“Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge.”

At CoLab, we work in complexity every day. There’s no single path through trauma, inequality, or systems change. But what we can offer—what I try to offer—is direction, care, and trust. I want to be the kind of leader who shows up not with all the answers, but with the courage to listen, the humility to adapt, and the values to stay anchored even when things feel uncertain.

In that sense, the compass reminds me that leadership isn’t about being the hero of the journey. It’s about walking alongside others, keeping us true to what we believe in, and holding the bigger picture—especially when the way forward isn’t yet clear.

So here’s to all the quiet compasses out there: the steady leaders, the hopeful guides, the ones who help others find their way.
