For anyone thinking of joining our team, one of our Welcome Team volunteers has kindly offered an insight into their experience of volunteering at CoLab...
"Following a period of being unwell I felt ready to get involved in something new, so I signed up for a course at CoLab called ‘Speaking Up’ – mainly to regain the confidence I had recently lost but also to meet new people. I arrived on a cold February morning to a buzzing hub of people in the atrium and was directed to the Seminar Room, where the course was being held.
I felt immediately that CoLab was a unique space which felt safe, welcoming, friendly and non-judgemental, later it became clear that everyone was working towards the same goal – supporting people’s wellbeing and providing the facilities to do so.
I knew on the last day of the course that CoLab was a place that I wanted to be part of and so enquired about volunteering. After an induction session I started volunteering for the Welcome Team – meeting, greeting and signposting visitors. The Atrium space can be a hub of activity but can change in seconds to a place of calmness. My time volunteering has been an amazing experience: learning new skills, re-training, sharing experiences, giving/receiving support and meeting a wonderful mix of people, who all have something to contribute. There has never been a dull moment – I have found real kindness, compassion, generosity and friendship. Volunteering at CoLab has given me the courage and confidence to follow my dreams."
